Thermostats—What’s New?

If you caught our earlier blog you’ll know how the old-fashioned, round, manual thermostat works. But more and more people are switching those out for programmable versions.

The most common is the digital thermostat, which can be pre-programmed to control your room’s temperature to different levels at different times of the day (or night). Briefly, the programmable thermostat works like any thermostat: it measures the actual temperature of a room and, depending on that measurement, activates a heating or cooling system to bring the measurement to the desired temperature. Where the digital thermostat improves upon the older manual version is in being programmable. You can setback your desired temperature for those times of day when you don’t need your house to be so warm: when you’re in bed, or out at work. You can bring it back to the higher temperature just before you get up or come home. You can have it do different things at different times of the day or on different days of the week. For more details on this, check out the blog, “Let’s Talk Thermostats,” on the Lamprey Energy website.

Thermostat-2The disadvantages of the traditional digital thermostat is that it needs to be hard-wired to the heating or cooling system and you have to be present in order to program it. But there’s a whole new generation of themostats capable of doing all kinds of clever things:

  • There are wireless thermostats that connect remotely to the heating or cooling system so you don’t have to run wires through walls.
  • There are “talking” thermostats that can both announce their programmed settings and be activated by voice commands.
  • Thermostat-3There are thermostats that can be controlled remotely via telephone—you call your house, enter a password on a touch-tone phone, access your heating system and adjust the thermostat and more!
  • And then there are thermostats that work with smart-phone technology. They might look like the old-fashioned mercury dials but these are on a whole new level: You can “talk” to the thermostat when you’re away and some thermostats even know when your phone (and therefore, presumably, you) have left the property and when you’re on your way back and adjust the temperature setting accordingly!
